STUDENT HANDBOOK 2009-2010 (pdf)

SAFETY & TRANSPORTATION
For safety reasons, our building will be locked until 7:30 each morning. Please do not bring or allow your child to come before this time as we do not have supervision personnel until that time. Also, for the safety of your child, all doors are locked throughout the day. Visitors must be buzzed in through the front door and then must sign in at the main office and receive a visitor’s tag. No visitor’s are allowed in building without a visitor’s tag.

CAR RIDER
If your student is a car rider, he/she should be dropped off in the mornings at the circle drive on Olive Street. In the past, we have had a problem with students being let out in the street or in the bank parking lot. The intersection at the circle drive is very busy and we want to avoid any dangerous situations. It is also very important that you do not come to the upper level where buses are unloading and do not use the circle drive at the middle school unless you have a middle school student.

Another procedure the SBDM council has adopted to ensure the safety of your child is in regard to “change of transportation” requests. You must provide written (fax, student delivered, or e-mail) notice before 2:00 to make a change of transportation for that day. Telephone call-ins to make a change will not be accepted.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
We urge you to make an extra effort to see that your child has a regular and punctual pattern of attendance. Low attendance and tardiness affect a student’s academic, as well as his/her social and emotional development. Instruction begins in the classroom at 8:00. Students are considered tardy who arrive at school after 8:00 in the morning or leave before 2:50 in the afternoon. The Kentucky Department of Education has regulations for calculating attendance and tardiness when a student leaves for an appointment during the day. Please make every effort to schedule appointments after school hours. We also request that you call school by 9:00 A.M if your child will not be in attendance.

Our Mission Statement

Benton Elementary School Front Entrance

Benton Elementary is one of six elementary schools in the Marshall County School District with approximately 550 students enrolled.  Benton, Kentucky is located in the western region of our state.  Much of the success we have had, we attribute to the hard work of our faculty, staff, students, and the cooperation we have received from our parents and community.

We feel that involving students teaches responsibility.  Every morning a 4th or 5th grade student is responsible for leading the Pledge of Allegiance.  Our 5th grade students help monitor the halls in our Safety Patrol program.

Parent involvement is second to none at Benton Elementary.  Without parent volunteers many of our activities could never take place, especially in the Entry Level.  In order to keep parents better informed, all information from the school office is sent home only on Tuesdays, on blue paper.  Parents know to look for important information such as: the Monthly Calendar of Events, Breakfast and Lunch Menus, and Newsletters from our principal.  Recently we established an email news system that allows us to email parents important updates and information about our school.
