BMS Celebrated students with outstanding behavior for the entire school year. Students were treated to grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks, while engaging in outdoor activities such as corn hole, dodge ball, and karaoke. Several prizes were given away at the end of the night. Ian Harrington was the grand prize winner of the TV.

Student Government put on a very successful cornhole tournament on April 20th. Teams traveled from near and far to participate in the tournament. Whenever the smoke cleared, there was one clear winner, the actual charity. Money raised benefitted Carson Chapman, a 7th grade student at Calloway County Middle School. Carson has been diagnosed with a childhood form of cancer known as leukemia. SGA worked very hard to put the tournament that consisted of seventy-one teams. At the end of the day, the charity raised about $2,700.

BMS art students enjoyed sculpting clay to create original marionettes. Students also wrote stories for their characters.

Patricia Murphy, science teacher at BMS, recently received an $800.00 grant from the Marshall County Conservation District. The purpose of this project is to teach students that fossils go beyond just looking interesting on a shelf or museum. Fossils actually help in finding energy resources and help us anticipate the effects of possible environmental changes. Students will be able to use the data collected during the project and educate it to the community on how changes have occurred throughout time.

19 BMS students participated in the KMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest held on Saturday March 2nd. Of the 11 events entered, BMS received 4 Distinguished ratings, 5 Proficient ratings and 2 Apprentice ratings. The students participating were Matthew Youngblood, Andy Parks, Isaac Bayer, Zach Etheridge, Gauge Thweatt, Savannah Hunt, Emilie Shemwell, Madison Culp, Taylen Henry, Breonna Logothetis, Mallory Shaw, Elli Inglish, Macie Kane, Sydney Logothetis, Jesus Lara, Angeleenia Logothetis, Cole Wyatt, Devon Canup and Ian Timpe.
BMS Student and Faculty Basketball Game

BMS students in Mrs. Chumbler-Bryant's 8th grade Visual Art's class work hard to comlete Rain Barrel designs. These designs were submitted by students in all art classes. Students voted on the top designs to be reproduced. These winning designs were as follows; Ray Houghton,6th grade, Nicole Tosh, 8th grade, Kierstin Hendrick, 6th grade, Madeline Henson, 8th grade, and Emily Norman, 7th grade. The barrels will soon be displayed in public spaces throughout the Benton community.

BMS 6th grade Visual Arts students are creating silouette collages based on their individual interests. Students incorporated each group member's personal interests such as athletics, clubs, academics and community service into their silouette. Photos were also taken of each student to use for facial features. This project emphasizes how we should all appreciate each other's differences and talents.

BMS art students created masks inspired by the celebration of Mardi Gras. Students enjoyed this hands-on learning experience. Mardi Gras will be celebrated on Feb. 12th in New Orleans.

Students in Mr. Luke Anderson's 6th grade world geography classes recently participated in the The Stock Market Game, an online economics resource and competition that allows students to manage their own simulated stock portfolios. The performance of their simulated investments coincided with the performance of the actual markets, including the the New York Stock Exchange, providing students with a real world investment experience. BMS 6th grade students Kathryn Howard, Kayla Strozzo, Matt Holmes, and Garrett Hurley were members of the winning team in the central kentucky elementary/middle school region. Students were visited by economists Todd Broker and Larry Brown from the Department of Economic Education at Murray State University who awarded the winning team with t-shirts. The entire class also received ink pens and lanyards from the College of Business at Murray State University. The Stock Market Game aids in the development of essential communication skills, while also supplementing social studies and mathematics core content through real world application.

Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Hamilton's 6th grade Science classes at recently went on a mission to Mars at the Challenger Center in Paducah,
Ky. While there they participated in various hands-on experiments to determine
how to successfully land on the Moon. These experiments were based on the areas
of science, math, and technology.

Students in Mrs. Murphy's Science class at BMS recently completed a comparative analysis of the planets in our solar system. With this analysis and their creative touches, students presented their findings to their classmates.

BMS arts & humanities students participated in activities to reflect and improve self-image. Students participated in Positive Back Talk where they walked around the room and wrote one positive comment on each students' paper on their back. They also enjoyed mirroring exercises.

Students were selected to paint ornaments for the National Christmas Tree in Washington DC. A special thank you to Mrs. Valera Brooks for helping students with decorating these ornaments. Students selected were: Nicole Tosh, Sommer Lucas, Klein Johnson, Hayden Eubanks, Ragan Harris, Madeline Henson, Callie Bridges, and Marlee Henson.

BMS beta club recently reached out to their classmates to
help the Marshall County needline. They challenged each student to bring in at
least 5 canned goods. These canned goods will be used to assist needline during
the upcoming holiday season. Mr. Anderson's 6th grade class collected the most
during the drive.

On Friday, November 9th, BMS had their “Doting over Distinguished” celebration. This walk recognizes all the students that scored a distinguished on one or more of their 2011-2012 K-PREP tests. Distinguished students paraded around the court square for businesses, parents, teachers, and classmates to celebrate their success.

Jason Lindsey from Hooked on Science, featured on Saturday mornings on WPSD, visited BMS. Teachers and students created hypotheses and then conducted science experiments testing out the scientific concepts of electricity, magnetism, potential and kinetic energy. The students had a great time while learning about science.

BMS eighth grade students visited West Kentucky Skills and Crafts Center in Hickory recently. This trip was part of their focus on learning about career opportunities for highly trained workers. Careers that they were introduced to were auto mechanics, welding, heating and cooling technology, and nurse training. The Skills and Crafts Center is part of West Kentucky Community and Technical College. The field trip was funded through a grant.

Congratulations to the following 7th graders who qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program based on their excellent performance on the tests they took in the spring. To qualify, these students had to score at the 95th percentile or above on the K-PREP in the areas of reading or math. Students are: Devon Canup, Luke Carnine, Derek Doss, Jadyn Fuller, Mallory Harrington, Taylen Henry, Angeleenia Logothetis, and Skyler Smith.

BMS hosted Family Reading Night on October 22. Students were able to purchase books from the book fair, check out new books, read, and earn double points for Accelerated Reader tests taken. Winners of a free book for attending were Whitley Vance, Lexee Miller, and Chase Chambers.

BMS held their monthly CAP assembly on
September 28th. The monthly assemblies are held throughout the year to
celebrate students' character, achievement, and pride. Following the awards, the faculty and students participated in an Extreme Fun Day
with a variety of games and activities.

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway's Fall Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Program officially kicked off. He delivered an important message to BMS students. Mr. Conway brought with him a powerful weapon; a father who lost his son, who started taking prescription pills in middle school.To learn more about the state's efforts to fight prescription drug abuse visit

Every month, BMS celebrates academic achievement in academics with the CAP Assembly. During the assembly, students are recognized for exhibiting character, achievement, and pride. Following the awards, students and faculty are treated to entertainment. This month there was a BMS version of the Olympics. The four teams that were represented were the 6th, 7th, 8th, and faculty squads. The teams competed in three events including track and field, gymnastics, and swimming. The faculty team won the gold.

Students in Mrs. Chumbler's art class at BMS participated in Calvert City's Annual "Fernfest" Children's Art Show. It was held on Saturday September 1st. Three students placed 1st in three different categories. This year's winners were 1st place, Klein Johnson (7th grade) 1st place, Madison Culp (7th grade) and, 1st place, Evan Smith (6th grade) . Congratulations to all who entered the contest.

BMS students in Mr. Chris Harvey’s seventh grade social studies class recently participated in the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Voter Slogan Contest. Students submitted slogans promoting voter registration and voter participation. Slogans had to contain attention-grabbing words or phrases that expressed the importance of Kentuckians participating in local, state, and national elections by registering and going to the polls to exercise their democratic freedom of participating in elections. Tyler Lawrence won second place in the statewide contest with his slogan, “Drop the remote, grab your coat, and go vote!” Tyler was awarded a $300 cash prize by Kentucky Secretary of State, Allison Lundergan Grimes.

All school faculty have been trained on "Signs of Suicide" as required by Senate Bill 65. Guidance counselors will also be training our students on warning signs. The program "ACT" focuses on acknowledging, caring, and telling a trusted adult if a student is worried about a friend.
